The Land Transportation Office (LTO) and Department of Information and Communications Technology (DICT) are set to launch the online or electronic version of the driver’s license in the country.
This is in disregard of President Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos, Jr.’s directive to implement digitalization in government agencies.
According to LTO Chief Jayart Tugade, the digital driver’s license will serve as an alternative to the physical license card and it can be accessed or seen in a “super app” created by DICT.
“The advantage of the digital license is that motorists can present it to law enforcement officers during apprehension. It is equivalent to presenting the physical driver’s license,” paliwanag ni Tugade.
“We also appreciate the way the super app functions similarly to a wallet, containing all government IDs, among other things, within your mobile device,” dagdag pa nito.
Tugade also pointed out that the public now has options from using a paper Official Receipt (OR) as a temporary driver’s license amid the limited supply of plastic cards.
Aside from the digital driver’s license, the LTO Chief said the public can use the “super app” for various agency transactions such as license registration and renewal as well as online payments.
Related to security matters, Tugade learned that the security features used of the physical driver’s license are also included in the digital version, apart from the “super app’s own security measures.” “
Tugade stressed that the e-governance partnership between LTO and DICT is only proof that the agency is serious about pushing digitalization in its transactions and services.
“Simplifying and digitalizing more services will ultimately aid the agency in eradicating corruption,” pagdedeklara ni Tugade.
Last March, LTO and DICT formally entered an e-governance partnership aimed at collaborating towards improving and strengthening the digitalization of agency systems and processes for overall efficiency and effective public service.
